Do not bring an SLR camera

While a lot of the hike is very picturesque and beautiful, you definitely do not need an SLR camera. They are too bulky and you end up serving your equipment as opposed to your equipment serving you. It’s too much of a hassle and I guarantee that you will not regret leaving it behind.

The Camino de Santiago is a time for reflection and a time to absorb the idea that you are walking in the footsteps of thousands of people before you. While yes you are surrounded by great scenery you can easily do with a simple pocket-sized digital camera.

As well, things tend to go missing and or tend to break on the Camino. I lost my sunglasses twice and broke them once. Imagine if you have an SLR camera that is very valuable, fragile and bulky. You’ll either lose it because of thieves, or you’ll break it because after walking hundreds of kilometers its bound to get a little worn, or you’ll just wish you left it at home because your bag is too heavy and nothing can fit in it.

So, moral of the story, leave your SLR camera at home.

I tried bringing it once before and the shots were nice yes, but it was still very heavy to carry. I settled for a nice digital camera the next time and it was still good.
