Your afternoon is always free

As the day goes on people tend to stop walking at around noon because any time after that it starts to get too hot. And frankly, I’m just tired after 6 hours of walking and 20 something kilometers. Since this is probably how you feel too, you have to use your afternoon wisely. It is this time that people usually enjoy a lot about the Camino de Santiago. Take that time to rest, meet people or read a book.

Resting is usually one of the first things that I do when I arrive. After I put on my linen coverings on the bed I sleep for maybe two hours because studies show that that in that time your body can recharge by 80%. It usually helps in alleviating any sore pains in your feet or back. It usually works for me so I recommend it.

The afternoons is when people are usually more relaxed and at ease and can share their stories with you. Its easier to meet people here than to meet people while walking. When you walk, people are tired and they are trying to maintain a pace so any conversations you have there will likely be short lived. So if you want to meet people, you will have better chances in the afternoon at the albergue or in the cafe.

Lastly reading a book is one of those luxuries that gets more and more difficult with modern life. Too often are there distractions of modern life that prevent us from sitting down and reading a book for a prolonged amount of time. So when you can actually sit down and find the time to read a book, the do it.

I brought the Stand by Stephen King along to read. It definitely took a long time to read. I started in St. Jean de Pied and finished it in Leon where I gave it to someone else. I didn’t want to carry such a heavy paperback haha
