Minimize your gear

Time and time again I see people throw away stuff they thought they would need but never used. Ask yourself if you really need 4 t-shirts or if you can just wash one while wearing the other and alternate it up everyday. All these little things add to the weight of the bag and by relation, add weight to your back.

When I first did this hike my bag weight 8kg. By the time I reached Santiago de Compostela I had reduced it even further to 6kg, which was very impressive. The second time I did this hike I overpacked because I assumed I could take on more after having seen how successful 6kg was. My bag became a total 15kg. Let me say that that was the worst packing ever. By the time I finished hiking on that day my back was in complete pain and my whole body was stiff. Let’s just say it took several hours for my back to get back to a more reasonable feeling.

The reason why minimizing your gear is so crucial is because your gear can slow you down and it can hurt you as it did to me. I always try to tell myself that your gear works for you, you don’t work for your gear.

What do you really need to bring on this Camino? I mean i asked that before I started packing. Once I started packing my bag felt light. It was only once I finished that I realized how much stuff I needed and how much it weighed! This was even after I tried being strict with myself.

about 15kg or 33lbs. A little too much honestly. I ended shipping some stuff to Santiago and throwing away other stuff, which really helped.

you will always see people with large bags and some with small bags. It really depends on what you personally need and what you can personally carry. But this guide is correct in suggesting that you minimize your gear as much as you can.
