Walk at a good pace and do not rush

One of the times I did this hike it lead to disaster. Not because of my equipment or waking up early but because I did not pace myself well. I was walking so fast that I would pass person after person trying to beat the crowd but as well trying to get a good workout. When most people slowed down on hills, that’s when I would speed up and walk even faster, attacking that hill. Well eventually I got shin splints. I had to see the Red Cross person (which is often rare) for help. He told me to stop walking for two days or else I will develop for tendonitis. So as long as you leave early enough, you should not need to walk so fast.

The best advice I can give you after learning from that mistake is to find someone that has a good pace and that you can walk with or  someone or at least that you can watch and maintain a good, constant distance between you and them. This is so that your pace is synced with their pace and that you never end up being too slow or too fast. Pacing is definitely one of the most important fundamentals to hiking and if you do not have a good pace then you won’t have a good time hiking.

It helps to walk with other people and to use their pace as a good reference

    I was wondering…why the rush.?
Have you thought about the journey, rather than the destination?
