A Camino experience with charity and good will

My name is Desmond from Wales. I did my first hike back in 1998 and I remember this one particular incident. I don’t remember exactly where it was but it was near Leon.

I woke up one morning at around 7am, not too late but definitely not early I did not feel particularly well the night before so I was debating whether to leave the hostel or not. I left at around 7:30am because I was feeling better but my pace was particularly slow. My plan was to only walk the standard 20+ kilometers for the day but towards noon I was really picking up my stride. I eventually forgot about stopping at the +20km point and walked into 3pm. By that time I had realized I had passed my stop and should just keep continuing on. While my head wanted to keep going my body wanted to stop – the only problem was there were no hostels for another 15km.

I began to I get really hungry because I did not have any food with me. As I was walking, at around 5pm I see a man by the side of the road. As I pass him he offers me a piece of bread and I respectfully decline. Further down I’m taking a break and clearing my boots of stones and then he passes me and offers me bread again. Once again, I respectfully decline.

When I finally reach the town I find the albergue and drop my bags off and get food at the grocery. I decide to eat and enjoy my food in the common area. While I’m sitting I see that man again talking to others. I approach him to say thanks again for offering me food. We started to talk and then I found out that his name is Jesus. What I learned from this all was that God is always there to offer you help and that it might not always come the way you would expect it to. So when you walk the Camino, if someone offers you help, you take it!

When I hear about Desmond from Wales, I think of Desmond from Lost. Except there, the character is originally from Scotland haha

What a brilliant story, if there is one thing I have learnt from the past its never be to proud to accept help.

Spot on with this write-up, I absolutely feel this web site needs much more attention. I’ll probably be returning to see more, thanks for the advice!
